GTA 6 Preload Guide: November 12 Start, Expected File Size, Storage Prep & Code-in-Box Explained
GTA 6 digital preload opens November 12, with physical code redemption on the same day. A October 27 PS Store backend reading put the PS5 install at ~210GB (still unannounced by Rockstar) — this guide updates its storage checklist accordingly, and explains code-in-box plus the $20 Ultimate upgrade.
Overview
The timeline (confirmed): preload opens November 12, 2026 — digital downloads start, and physical boxes arrive the same day with a redemption code that works immediately. The game unlocks on November 19. The Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus must be claimed by November 20.
Notably, digital and physical share the same preload date — Rockstar isn't giving digital an exclusive window this time. Physical buyers just wait for the courier.
By platform
PS5: start the download manually from your library, or enable rest-mode auto-download (Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → Stay Connected to the Internet). GTA 6 requires the full unlock, so preloading only shows a progress bar.
Xbox Series X|S: Smart Delivery handles the right build for your console; you can reprioritize in the manage queue.
Unlock time: Rockstar hasn't announced regional unlock times. Based on recent Rockstar launches, most regions unlock at local midnight while some use a single global moment — trust the countdown on your store page. We'll update this page the moment it's confirmed.
Size: the 210GB reading (⚠️ reported — not announced)
Rockstar has published no install size. On October 27, PS Store backend tracker PlayStation Game Size reported the PS5 download at 210GB — picked up by Kotaku and ComputerBase — while the Xbox store shows only a placeholder, so the Xbox build's real footprint is unknown.
| Game | Platform | Install size | |---|---|---| | GTA 5 (current-gen) | PS5 / XSX | ~110 GB | | Red Dead Redemption 2 | PS5 / XSX | ~150 GB | | GTA 6 (Oct 27 reading) | PS5 | ~210 GB | | GTA 6 (Xbox) | XSX / S | Not published |
That makes it one of the biggest of the generation — though not a record, since several Call of Duty installs with DLC are larger. The real squeeze is Xbox Series S: usable space on the ~512GB SSD is tight, and 210GB would take close to two-thirds of it.
To repeat: this is a store-backend reading, not an official announcement, it can still change before launch, and it excludes future updates, DLC and the unannounced online mode. See our dedicated size report.
Preload checklist
- Clear at least 250 GB — the 210GB reading + day-one patch + future updates headroom. Check free space on PS5 under Settings → Storage.
- Test your connection — 210GB takes ~4.7 hours at 100Mbps, close to ten at 50Mbps. Schedule an overnight download if needed.
- Update your console — system updates land frequently during launch week; get ahead of it.
- Enable auto / rest-mode download — so Nov 12 needs no babysitting.
- Physical buyers: redeem the code the day your package arrives.
- Check the GTA+ auto-renew — digital pre-orders include one month; decide before day 30.
Physical & the Ultimate upgrade
- Code-in-box: no disc, just a download code — the first fully disc-less physical release in the series.
- No physical Ultimate edition: Ultimate is digital-only.
- $20 upgrade: Standard owners (including physical) can buy the Ultimate upgrade on PlayStation Store / Microsoft Store for identical digital content.
Our take: collectors who want the box and the Ultimate perks should go physical Standard + $20 digital upgrade ($79.99 + $20 = $99.99, same as Ultimate, but you get the box too).
