GTA 6 Pre-Order Numbers: ~6.45M Copies and $630M Estimated, 29% of US Gamers Say They'll Buy — Still No Official Word

Speculated

Sensor Tower estimates 6.45 million digital pre-orders worth about $630 million as of October 20, with PlayStation at 74%. Circana's tracker puts purchase intent at 29% of US console and PC players, the highest it has ever recorded. Neither figure is official; Rockstar and Take-Two have confirmed nothing.

Overview

Three weeks out, Rockstar and Take-Two have still published no pre-order figures. Two third-party firms have nonetheless sketched a fairly specific picture — and it bears repeating: these are estimates, not official data.

Sensor Tower: 6.45 million copies / $630 million (as of October 20)

| Platform | Pre-orders | Spend | Share | |---|---|---|---| | PlayStation 5 | ~4.8M | ~$468M | 74% | | Xbox Series X|S | ~1.66M | ~$162M | 26% | | Total | ~6.45M | ~$630M | 100% |

The reading a week earlier was roughly 6.08 million copies and $594 million — about 370,000 in a week. The estimate is net of refunds but excludes physical copies and does not cover every retail channel.

The pace is clearer in context: measuring US console digital pre-orders from 149 days before launch to 45 days before, Sensor Tower puts GTA 6 148% ahead of 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. That comparison covers US digital pre-orders only and shouldn't be extrapolated to worldwide, all-channel performance.

Circana: 29% purchase intent, the highest it has ever recorded

Circana's PlayerPulse tracker finds that 29% of US console and PC players say they intend to buy GTA 6 — the highest purchase intent the firm has logged for any game.

Analyst Mat Piscatella calls the launch "a rare cultural and commercial moment for the video game industry" and argues demand will spill beyond the game itself into consoles, accessories and gaming subscriptions. He expects many players still on last-generation hardware to buy a PS5 or Xbox specifically for it, and, with Black Friday approaching, names it a core driver of fourth-quarter spending.

Circana projects US game spending up 3% to $62.8 billion in 2026, beating the $61.7 billion record set in 2021. Take-Two expects record net bookings of $8.0–8.2 billion for the fiscal year ending March 2027.

Forecasts side by side (different windows — don't mix them)

| Source | What it measures | Figure | |---|---|---| | Newzoo (July) | Global digital spend, first pre-order week | ~$260M | | Newzoo (central case) | Launch-week sales | ~$4.5B (~51M units at an assumed $88 average), range $3.3–5.2B | | Piper Sandler (June) | Day-one units | 45M+ (modelled on r/GTA6 traffic) | | Real-world reference | GTA 5, day one, 2013 | 11.21M units |

The next official checkpoint is November 9, when Take-Two reports fiscal Q2 2027 after the market close, with a call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. That quarter closed September 30 and contains no GTA 6 sales; the company has guided to a net loss of $140–157 million.

FAQ

Is 6.45 million pre-orders an official figure?

No. It comes from Sensor Tower's proprietary panel and statistical modelling, covers only the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores, excludes physical copies, and has not been confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. Pre-order estimate is the accurate phrasing; it is not an official sales figure.

When will we get official numbers?

The next official checkpoint is November 9, when Take-Two reports fiscal Q2 2027 after the US market close, with a call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. That quarter closed on September 30 and contains no GTA 6 sales, and the company has guided to a net loss of 140 to 157 million dollars. Actual sales data comes later.

Why is the Ultimate Edition share so high?

Carl Chicas, Sensor Tower's head of games, said in August that the 99.99 dollar Ultimate Edition accounted for about 89% of pre-orders at the time, roughly 88.5% on PlayStation and 90% on Xbox. The industry norm for premium editions is 10 to 20%, with 50% during a pre-order window considered strong. The likely reason: people willing to pay four or five months early are the most loyal core audience and are not sensitive to a 20 dollar gap. That share is expected to fall closer to launch.
