Rockstar's Art Director on Whether GTA 6 Was Cut Down: "We've Built a Pyramid on Everest"

Confirmed

Long-time art director and GTA 6 lead Aaron Garbut tells Edge the studio could not compromise on scale, detail, interactivity, story or open world after more than a decade of waiting, describing the result as "a pyramid on Everest". He also cites roughly 600,000 unique animations and a writing team dedicated solely to background NPCs.

Overview

Less than three weeks before launch, Aaron Garbut — Rockstar North's head of development and the series' long-serving art director — answered the question players keep asking in an Edge interview: was anything cut to hit the date?

His words:

"We can't just trot out something that's what people might expect, or that was the easy thing to do. We've not compromised on the scale, the detail, the interactivity, the story, the open world."

"I feel like we've built a pyramid on Everest."

Garbut stressed the team is acutely aware of the expectations: roughly thirteen years have passed since GTA 5, and simply meeting what players assumed they'd get was never going to be enough.

The numbers behind the claim

  • Roughly 600,000 unique animations across the game (against an estimated ~55,000 in GTA 5 and ~300,000 in RDR2)
  • A writing team dedicated solely to background NPCs, each pedestrian carrying a temperament, aggression level, situation and a record of how you've treated them
  • Jason and Lucia sweat based on how intensely they dance — a detail with zero bearing on the main plot, but one that shows what Rockstar is chasing: character state tied to action rather than a fixed texture
  • A game so large that no single person at Rockstar knows everything about it

How to read it

Worth keeping some distance: this is a developer assessing their own work, not third-party verification. It proves nothing about whether the game is fun, and it does not address the separate debate over development crunch.

One signal is nonetheless real: with three weeks to go, both studio heads — Garbut and Rob Nelson — went on the record, and Nelson said outright the game is "ready". In the past, Rockstar's language ahead of a delay has typically been far vaguer.

Still nothing on PC. Rockstar has announced no PC date. PC Gamer, reporting the remarks, noted the studio usually leaves at least seven months between console and PC versions and that GTA 5 took a year and a half — a reading of past cadence, not a promise for this game.
