Edge Visits Rockstar North: 12 New Screenshots, a 90-Minute Unscripted Demo, and Police Who Remember Your Outfit

Confirmed

Edge issue 430 (on sale 29 October) devotes 16 pages to GTA 6: Rob Nelson played unscripted for 90 minutes; police log your clothes, weapon, vehicle and camera exposure; a Criminal Profile runs from Professional to Irredeemable; Jason and Lucia's bond is a four-point scale. Twelve new screenshots landed with it, including the first proper look at the underwater hammerhead.

Overview

Three weeks out, Rockstar did something it rarely does: it let Edge's Simon Parkin into Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson picked up a controller and played for 90 minutes with no script and no publicist reading from one. The result is a 16-page cover story in Edge issue 430, on sale 29 October and free to read on GamesRadar+.

Twelve new screenshots

The feature carries 14 Rockstar-provided images, 12 of them new. They range across Vice City's dense waterfront skyline and neon nightscapes, small-town streets, trailer parks, industrial outskirts and rural Leonida — and one goes underwater to show a hammerhead shark moving along a coral corridor, a biome Rockstar has described far more often than it has shown.

On the character side: a close-up of VCPD officer Méndez (previously only hinted at in the Extended Look), Lucia in a white tank top and gold chain, Jason with long hair, a 24/7 store robbery, a motorcycle getaway, bikers riding in formation and a mud race.

What the police remember

The significant systemic change is how much the authorities retain. Per Edge, police log your description, whether you were alone or with a partner, your clothes, your weapon, and whether CCTV caught you, surfaced as icons at the top of the screen.

Escape logic changes with it: rather than waiting for wanted stars to cool, you change clothes, drop the weapon and split up from your partner to become progressively harder to identify. Stealing cars is riskier too — some drivers panic and flee, others are armed and fight back, newer premium cars may carry a tracker that gives away your position, and the owner may call the police afterwards.

Criminal Profile and the four-point relationship

Separate from the police, the game tracks a Criminal Profile rated from Professional to Irredeemable, and Rockstar says player behaviour affects how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds. Some story jobs require the pair to raise money first, through gas-station robberies, jewellery store heists and stealing requested vehicles for fences.

The relationship between Jason and Lucia is a four-point scale, raised through shared activities — spending time together, the gym, exploring Leonida — with players having some influence over how intimate it becomes. Rockstar declined to say whether the pair can marry, which immediately fed fan theories.

Density and detail

Other confirmed systems:

  • Weapons live in the car trunk rather than a menu; a shotgun slung across your back worries people less than one held in your hands
  • Scooter Bros, a phone service, delivers your owned vehicles to you; every car burns fuel and engines wear over time
  • Leonida has usable buses and trains
  • A longer day/night cycle; localised weather (fog, wind, season) affects roads, water, aircraft and pedestrian behaviour
  • NPC reactions vary by traits such as aggression — some run, some come looking for trouble. Rockstar built a dedicated team in Los Angeles (writers, directors, producers) for pedestrians, with roughly 600,000 unique animations across the game
  • Garbut mentions a perspiration system (Jason and Lucia sweat based on how hard they dance) and a disgust reaction originally built for a single scene: he walked into an unfamiliar house with photos of a dog in one room and the next room trashed by the animal, and Jason grimaced on his own

On scale, Garbut's new line is that there are "an order of magnitude more interiors" than before. Caveat: GTA 5 shipped with an estimated 70–80 enterable interiors — a ComicBook count, never published by Rockstar — so the resulting 700–800 figure is media arithmetic, not an official number.

What was already known: the map being roughly twice GTA 5's size with a landmass close to GTA IV + GTA V + RDR2 combined, and the 600,000 animations, both came out of the late-August wave after the New York Times visit. This feature restates them. What's genuinely new is the systems detail above and the 12 screenshots.

On the date itself, Nelson's position is unambiguous: the game is "ready".

FAQ

Does GTA 6's police system remember the player?

Yes. Edge describes a heat system: police hold your description, whether you were alone or with a partner, your clothes, your weapon, and whether CCTV caught you, all shown as icons at the top of the screen. Changing clothes, dropping the weapon and splitting up from your partner make you progressively harder to identify.

Does the Criminal Profile affect the story?

Yes. Rockstar confirmed to Edge that the Criminal Profile is a rating running from Professional to Irredeemable, and that player behaviour shapes how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds. Some story jobs require the pair to raise money first, via gas-station robberies, jewellery store heists and stealing requested vehicles for fences.

What is actually new in the 12 screenshots?

They span Vice City's waterfront skyline and neon nightscapes, small-town streets, trailer parks, industrial outskirts and the Leonida wetlands, with one going underwater to show a hammerhead shark moving along a coral corridor — a biome Rockstar has described far more often than it has shown. Characters include a close-up of VCPD officer Méndez, Lucia in a white tank top and gold chain, Jason with long hair, a 24/7 store robbery, a motorcycle getaway, bikers riding in formation and a mud race.

Which of these details were already public?

Worth separating: the map being roughly twice GTA 5's size with a landmass close to GTA IV, GTA V and RDR2 combined, and the 600,000-odd unique animations, both came out of the late-August wave after the New York Times visit and were restated by Game Informer in September. The only genuinely new figure is Aaron Garbut's line about an order of magnitude more interiors.
